[WEEKLY FEATURE] Rise of The Rose

by Fern Estrebello April 24, 2020
written by Fern Estrebello

Bands are always enjoyable to watch when they perform with live instruments. And beyond the K-Pop scene, Korean band has always been a thing. With that, one of the rising bands of today’s generation is The Rose.

The Rose is a Korean band under J&Star Company. It is composed of members Kim Woosung (Guitarist), Park Dojoon (Keyboardist), Lee Jaehyeong (Bassist), and Lee Hajoon (Drummer).

Back in 2015, Dojoon was a trainee when he first met Jaehyeong in busking. As the former was busy with his training, Jaehyeong then met Hajoon while practicing in the same studio. Later on that year, Dojoon joined the two after he left his company and decided to return in busking. Then the trio became the indie band, Windfall. As the group decided to look for another member, it was Dojoon who recruited Woosung who was once a participant of K-Pop Star. That was when they decided to enter their company and The Rose was born.

The band officially debuted in mainstream music with their song “Sorry” on August 3, 2017. Their debut song made its impact in Billboard as one of the best Korean Pop songs on the said year. The thrill does not stop there as the year 2018 began, Billboard named the group as one of top 5 Korean breakout artists to watch out. Indeed a good start for a band that was not from a big company and the music scene dominated by girl and boy groups.

Almost half year after their debut, the group had already sold-out their first European Tour Paint In Rose. The group was also awarded as Most Promising Artist in 2018 International K-Music Awards.

The Rose continues to rise and are also known for their tracks such as “Baby” and “Like We Used To.” They also recorded soundtracks for Korean dramas such as Strangers From Hell and Tofu Personified. Their latest comeback was a fresh and rhythmic sound with the track entitled, “Red.”

If you jam pop rock and/or alternative rock, check out The Rose. Enjoy the enthralling beats of Hajoon, alluring low tones of Jaehyong’s bass, enticing sound of Dojoon, and the raspy voice of Woosung. Listen to their songs and you just might be one of the ‘Black Rose’!*

[WEEKLY FEATURE] Dreamcatcher: The end of nightmare

by Stephanie Macayan April 19, 2020
written by Stephanie Macayan

Dreamcatcher is the first new generation Idol to sound heavy and metal in the K-Pop industry. But before their debut as Dreamcatcher, five of the members was used to be in a group called “MINX”.

Jiu, Sua, Siyeon, Yoohyeon and Dami is originally debuted as the member of “MINX” under Happy Face Entertainment last 2014 and had a couple of releases, after 2 years they were disbanded and re-debuted as “Dreamcatcher” with additional two members which is Gahyeon and Handong. From cute and bubbly, their concept changed drastically.

The group debuted with their album “Nightmare” and a title track “Chase Me”. They became famous with their nightmare concept with the continuous story-line through their songs and music video. Because of their unique and original concept their fanbase known as “InSomnia” extremely grown and gained a lot of fans in the western country.

Dreamcatcher

We all know that rock music is popular in Japan and made global waves over the past years. In Korean music industry, rock music is a rarity, and this is what makes Dreamcatcher so unique. Pairing rock music with a clean and pure of the singing-dancing group.

Also, their visuals are different from the typical girl group with a cute and blooming image. Dreamcatcher is known as witch and haunted looks, perfectly suit with the members and they slayed it.

Year 2017, Dreamcatcher auditioned in a survival reality show called “MIXNINE”. Unfortunately, only four members got the opportunity to join which is Jiu, Siyeon, Yoohyeon and Dami. But during the show, the four members decided to leave due to conflicting schedules with the group’s tour in Brazil.

Fun facts about Dreamcatcher; each member represents a nightmare: Jiu – being chased by a stranger, Sua – being tied up, Siyeon – being trapped in a small place, Handong – being watched, Yoohyeon – being lost in an unknown place, Dami – having scars all over the body, Gahyeon – falling from a very high place.

Another fact, January 13, 2017 and it was Friday the 13th, a fearful day in western superstition. On that day, they debuted with horror concept. And fans think it was a brilliant Idea.

Right now, the group already had six comebacks with 4 mini album and 2 singles. They have also released two Japanese special digital singles dedicated to their fans. The latest comeback of Dreamcatcher is “Scream” in the album “Dystopia: The Tree of Language” and currently active in promoting without Handong because she is currently in the show “Youth With You” in China.

InSomias are still hoping for their first win.
