[WEEKLY FEATURE] Dreamcatcher: The end of nightmare

by Stephanie Macayan April 19, 2020
written by Stephanie Macayan

Dreamcatcher is the first new generation Idol to sound heavy and metal in the K-Pop industry. But before their debut as Dreamcatcher, five of the members was used to be in a group called “MINX”.

Photo from: Military Culture Magazine

Jiu, Sua, Siyeon, Yoohyeon and Dami is originally debuted as the member of “MINX” under Happy Face Entertainment last 2014 and had a couple of releases, after 2 years they were disbanded and re-debuted as “Dreamcatcher” with additional two members which is Gahyeon and Handong. From cute and bubbly, their concept changed drastically.

The group debuted with their album “Nightmare” and a title track “Chase Me”. They became famous with their nightmare concept with the continuous story-line through their songs and music video. Because of their unique and original concept their fanbase known as “InSomnia” extremely grown and gained a lot of fans in the western country.

Dreamcatcher

We all know that rock music is popular in Japan and made global waves over the past years. In Korean music industry, rock music is a rarity, and this is what makes Dreamcatcher so unique. Pairing rock music with a clean and pure of the singing-dancing group.

Also, their visuals are different from the typical girl group with a cute and blooming image. Dreamcatcher is known as witch and haunted looks, perfectly suit with the members and they slayed it.

Year 2017, Dreamcatcher auditioned in a survival reality show called “MIXNINE”. Unfortunately, only four members got the opportunity to join which is Jiu, Siyeon, Yoohyeon and Dami. But during the show, the four members decided to leave due to conflicting schedules with the group’s tour in Brazil.

Fun facts about Dreamcatcher; each member represents a nightmare: Jiu – being chased by a stranger, Sua – being tied up, Siyeon – being trapped in a small place, Handong – being watched, Yoohyeon – being lost in an unknown place, Dami – having scars all over the body, Gahyeon – falling from a very high place.

Another fact, January 13, 2017 and it was Friday the 13th, a fearful day in western superstition. On that day, they debuted with horror concept. And fans think it was a brilliant Idea.

Right now, the group already had six comebacks with 4 mini album and 2 singles. They have also released two Japanese special digital singles dedicated to their fans. The latest comeback of Dreamcatcher is “Scream” in the album “Dystopia: The Tree of Language” and currently active in promoting without Handong because she is currently in the show “Youth With You” in China.

InSomias are still hoping for their first win.

[KPOP RELEASES] April 11-17, 2020

by Shaira Aquino April 17, 2020
written by Shaira Aquino

Here’s a collection of some of the K-Pop comebacks, debuts and releases that happened this week so you won’t miss anything while spending time with your love ones at home!

April 11 – “Lost Life” by Min Kyung Hoon

OCN’s “Rugal” OST PART. 3 “Lost life” is a slow-alternative rock genre track that combines medium-pitched Guitar riff, dreamy Synth pad and slow but intense Drum-beat starting from the intro. The lyrics, which yearn for the feelings of a person who lost everything he loved and fell into despair, and the dream of becoming distant like a mirage, make listeners feel a heavy sense of ordeal. Adding the uniqueness of “Min Kyung-hoon,” the nation’s top rock vocal, to the dramatic build-up sharp sound, “Lost Life” comes as a cry from a man with a torn, uncut wound to the world.

April 12 – “Actually.. I miss you” by GyeongseoYeji

“Actually.. I miss you,” is a song that expresses the feelings of honest longing and regret from the perspective of a woman and a man, and it is a song that anyone who has experienced a breakup will sympathize with, leading each of the first chorus with the words “Actually I” and “Actually Me.” Gyeongseo Yeji, a meeting between two female vocalists who have been the talk of the town on SNS, is dreaming to be the second “DAVICHI” through this debut song!

April 13 – ‘Apink’ 9th Mini Album [LOOK] – ‘덤더럼(Dumhdurum)’

Proving Apink’s infinite potential, they made a comeback with their ninth mini album “LOOK” after a year and three months. The title track “Dumhdurum” is a combination of addictive melodies and synth leads, and the expression of love in front of the audience. The addictive hook and Asian melody sensibilities are showing Apink’s new color, which is enough to show another one of their charms!

April 14 – “오빠집에 놀러와” by Lee Dae-won

Lee Dae-won, who made a big impression as a champion trot singer through TV Chosun’s “Mr. Trot,” threw his debut album “Champ and First Step.” The title track “오빠집에 놀러와” is a semi-trot dance song that breaks away from the existing trot, especially the humorous lyrics and lyrics featuring singer Lee Dae-won’s lyricist talent. The song is a song that fits well with the three beats of the vocal, which makes you shake. It is a song that showed Lee Dae-won’s charm to the maximum!

April 14 – CRAVITY SEASON1. [HIDEOUT: REMEMBER WHO WE ARE]

CRAVITY, which has drawn attention as the first boy group to be introduced by Starship Entertainment in five years, just released their debut album and took a strong first step. CRAVITY is a boy group consisting of a total of nine members, Serim, Alan, Jung Mo, Woo Bin, Won Jin, Min Hee, Hyeong Jun, Tae Young and Sung Min, which means that they will combine “Creativity” and “Gravity” to draw them into our universe with their unique charm. The title track “Break all the Rules,” which is a hopeful of young people who want to move forward without hesitation and also a consolation to themselves, compresses and conveys the charm of the eyes-overwhelming performances and passionate members under the theme of “Let’s break the frame and rules we have locked ourselves.” In particular, the tight rap-vocal line operation of the members, along with the harsh texture sound and powerful chorus, is enough to show the completed teamwork.

April 15 – LOONA’s JINSOUL – 시간은 한 바퀴 돌아 (As Time Goes)

JinSoul, a talented member of the girl group, LOONA who has excellent skills and soulful voices to perfect the high-pitched song parts challenged her OST debut with “As Time Goes”! A song by Jay Lee, a composer who participated in a number of OSTs, including Hotel Del Luna, Secret Mother, and A Perfect Wife. “As Time Goes” is an emotional ballad that adds attractive JinSoul’s voice to the melody of the piano and guitar.

April 16 – 장덕철(Jang Deok-cheol) – 그대만이 (You)

Jang Deok-cheol is back with a new song full of spring scents! The digital single “You”, composed and written by Jang Deok-cheol’s Deok-in, is a song that expresses his heart to his beloved lover. It is a ballad that conveys warm sympathy and happiness to many people who are in love with delicate and emotional lyrics and songs that feature the tone that only Jang Deok-cheol can present.

April 17 – Jung Dong Ha (정동하) – LOVE

Jung Dong-ha’s self-composed song “LOVE” is a special gift for his fans. His warm, affectionate voice that flows gently over a comfortable and soft guitar melody makes this song express the miracle of love that comes one day like a spring breeze that passes gently like warm spring sunshine. Jung Dong Ha wanted to capture that sentimental feeling through this song like “A story that makes you so beautiful and so shiny that you don’t want to know the end” .
