[WEEKLY FEATURE] Hear the Sibling Sound of AKMU

by Fern Estrebello May 9, 2020
written by Fern Estrebello

A duo’s sound is a fruit of compatibility, what more if the music came from siblings. Get to know the harmonic coherence of one of the successful paired-musicians in the KPOP scene, AKMU.

Akdong Musician, or AKMU, is a sibling duo consisted of Lee Chan Hyuk and Lee Su Hyun and are under YG Entertainment.

Kpop Star 2 journey

The duo used to live in Mongolia before joining K-Pop Star 2 where they gained a lot of attention and won. During the preliminaries, they performed their original composition “Don’t Cross Your Legs” that awed the judges. Even Yang Hyun Suk, YG Entertainment former CEO, complimented them as “True Artists.”

Beyond Sibling Sound

AKMU debuted with their album, Play, where all tracks were written and produced by Chan Hyuk. They are known for their songs such as “200%” and “Give Love.” Their song “Melted” is one of their creative compositions where they tell the story of the complexity of aging.

Their EP entitled Spring was promoted by two singles: “Re-Bye” and “How People Move.” Both tracks can be described as a play of music. Billboard mentioned their music – “boast a more theatrical feel to them to show the young duo is growing an exciting pace.”

Just last year, they made their comeback after Chan Hyuk finished his military service. AKMU served another aesthetically well-made album entitled Sailing. Though AKMU is known for their dynamics and experimental sound, this time they served a surreal album with its soothing yet calming songs like their title track, “How Can I Love the Heartbreak, You’re the One I Love.”

Chan Hyuk reveals through Nylon that the songs in their album were composed during his two-year enlistment. But besides his creativity, Su Hyun’s voice blends well in their own sound that never fails to amaze everyone until now.

What do you think of AKMU’s music? What are our favorites?

In the music video, she showed her stunning visuals with her strong glittery make-up that compliments her glamorous outfits together with her jaw-dropping performance accompanied by her out-of-this-world’s best backup dancers wearing high heels and dark makeup which makes the whole performance very interesting and powerful.

The choreography of the song is in a whole new level and it proved that her skills is not a joke and her only opponent to beat is herself showing how she wanted to try new things in every comeback.

A dancing queen

Chung Ha became a successful solo artist when I.O.I (아이오아이) officially disbanded on January 31st 2017. She is known as one of the best dancers in KPOP when she showed her incredible skills in dancing while auditioning in a 2016 reality show ‘Produce 101’ season 1 on Mnet. It all started when dancer trainer, Bae Yoon Jung, ask Chung Ha to dance in any song they’re going to play. Everyone is shocked when she flawlessly dances to ‘Hey Mrs. Carter’ by Beyonce.
